Fifth graders, and sixth graders from Trumansburg, visit the Cayuga Nature Center. Students will focus on Wilderness Skills & Animal Adaptations.  They will learn how people can be prepared for the worst case in the wilderness as well as how animals adapt to their environment to survive.

Pre trip lesson plan by Miriam Mack, explores the question, “How does working together or individually to meet challenges head on help people grow emotionally." while reading the book "Everest".

KDT! Book for Fifth Grade (CNC)

KDT! provides books to all Pre-K through fifth grade children to encourage literacy and reinforce Kids Discover the Trail! curriculum. To prolong the excitement of the trip, some teachers give the book to the children (when appropriate) on a day other than the day of the field trip.

Some helpful hints...

  • Read the book with or to the children in class before sending the book home.

  • Have the children write their names in the book

  • Use the lesson plans that are posted below

  • Be sure to inform families about the book in your weekly newsletters. Please alert them to the parent flier that gives ideas about how to use the book at home!

The book for 5th grade (Cayuga Nature Center) is Everest by  Gordon Korman. Study guides for each chapter are included for the book Everest. Here are some additional lesson ideas for the Everest book!
